Sharksmart, which is based on the New Zealand Rugby Union’s RugbySmart Programme, is run by The Sharks Medical Centre and has been in existence for the last ten years.

It is a community focused injury prevention and performance programme which has been rolled out in schools and rugby clubs in Kwazulu Natal. It’s aim is to promote the spirit of the game and provide the resources to ensure that all rugby matches are played in a safe environment. It also aims to reduce injuries and ensure that all players enjoy the game.

SharkSmart has three primary target audiences viz. the broader public (especially parents), school coaches and the pupils themselves. Broad adolescent wellbeing issues such as the use of banned substances, binge drinking and bullying, are also addressed. SharkSmart also promotes and assists in facilitating the BokSmart Programme in KZN which is a formal accreditation programme for coaches and referees run by SA Rugby. The objective of SharkSmart is encompassed by its motto: “Play Safe, Play Fair”
